Goodwill San Mateo Tests Then Sells Broken Electronics – Goodwill San Mateo RIipped Me Off !! And not just me! The manager's name is Noel, and he personally and knowingly puts broken, expensive -looking stereo equipment right at the front of the store knowing it's broken. I asked him repeatedly if the unit had been bench tested before I bought it and he assured me it was, and that it was fine as far as they knew. I said I was willing to take my chances for this $50 piece since they had tested it. I came back within the hour - because when I took it home it "powered up" - but there was clearly no display - and they absolutely refused to give me a refund! And hey, Goodwill Corporate - I warned this manager, Noel, that the difference between $46 cash and $46 store credit would be this 1 star review of your store, and he didn't seem to think that mattered at all. zero business ethics, (and a real misunderstaniding of the power of the 'net to expose stuff like this).

There is a Yelp review where someone says this particular san mateo goodwill unloaded their car without permission and also took (expensive) items that were not meant for donation, and then refused to give back the items.

Seeing the complete lack of ethics with which I was treated on this transaction by the store manager himself, this other reviewers incident doesn't surprise me at all. Goodwill in San Mateo lost this good customer for no good reason.

They have a whole back section full of electronics, but they always have a couple of the "nicest" items that they put in front just as you walk in. These items are broken and they know it. When I called him on that, (in front of some customers), he (uncomfortably) indicated me that the other item sitting there "might" also be bad, so he'd better send it to the back to get tested again.

Hey Noel - Here's a lesson in business ethics: If you know that something is broken because you tested it, you have to say that it's broken with a little note saying "bad display" - not put it up front like it's fine, then personally lie about it to get $46. Goodwill is a fine organization that should not sully it's good name with sub-pawn-shop business practices.

Community thrift store accepts and sells donations of used clothing and housewares for a good cause. – In Short
Nonprofit chain of stores boasts more than 2,000 retail outlets and 3,300 donation centers nationwide. The charitable model relies on community members to contribute their gently used (or new) belongings--anything ranging from business and casual wear to home appliances, children's toys to books and computers--and purchase others' donations. The proceeds from the bargain-priced wares go toward job training and career-placement services for disadvantaged populations, including welfare recipients, homeless citizens and those with physical and mental disabilities.
