i thought i was in a david lynch film – where do i even start? well, i guess the beginning is a good place.
when we arrived at smeraldo's, the parking lot was full of people riding go-carts--adults and children alike. it was around 7 or 8 on a saturday night, but our arrival seemed to confuse everyone at the restaurant.
we walked into the restaurant, and we weren't greeted by any sort of host. we wandered forward a few feet, and someone working there happened to walk by. he, too, seemed confused by us being there, and he proceeded to lead us down some stairs into a basement level with tables and a bar. it soon became apparent that we were the only customers IN THE ENTIRE RESTAURANT. on a saturday.
we sat down and ordered drinks and started perusing the menu while two employees stood next to the bar and stared at us. i mean, i guess the service was spectacular. they were all up on our stuff, but they really had nothing else to do.
after we ordered, our food came out. to say it wasn't quality is an understatement. i believe we likened it to some sort of frozen stuffed shells you'd buy in bulk at sam's club or something.
now, don't get me wrong--i had a blast. i felt like i was in some sort of creepy, surrealist fantasy sequence. i could easily give this place 0 or 4 stars, depending on how i want to approach the experience.
would i eat the food again? i'd rather eat at sbarro. seriously. do i regret going there? hell no. i have stories for years.
good food and relaxing atmosphere – Smeraldo's is a great place to go and relax after a long day. GREAT FOOD! (the best bread and spaghetti ever!) we played a game of pool while waiting on our food. the owner is a true Italian and we had great conversation with him. i highly reccomend this place. on weekends they even have live bands and a little dance floor.
WHAT A GREAT PLACE TO GO – A GREAT PLACE TO HAVE SOCIAL DRINKS, OR AUTHENTIC ITALIAN CUISINE! EASY GOING RELAXED, VERY ENJOYABLE COMPANY. JUST ADULTS HAVING A GOOD TIME WITHOUT ALL THE HASSLE. SERVICE WAS GREAT, FOOD COOKED FRESH TO ORDER. THIS PLACE MAKES OLIVE GARDEN LOOK LIKE THE TACO BELL OF ITALIAN FOOD. GO ENJOY!
A trip through time – Miss Gypsy and I are intrepid adventurers so this review is aimed at like minded people. If you are into retro ambiance and food this place is for you. Think "Life on Mars". A fu manchu moustache and bell bottoms would not be out of style here.
I'm not sure what grabbed us about this place as we cruised along Gallatin Rd. Perhaps it was that aura of cheesiness that you find all along the drag but in Smeraldo's case it reached out to us like a big yellow buglight on a summer eve. Maybe it was the gated parking lot and rear entrance, plus we never saw more than two cars in the lot at anytime.
Anyway, MG and I enter through the red door and go down a dark hallway (which gave our eyes time to adjust) and are confronted with a time warp of '70s style. You enter onto a landing with stairs descending to the lounge and broad stairs ascending to the dining room. There is a small lounge on the landing but I couldn't tell if it was in use. After going up the stairs you approach a hostess stand with the largest macrame' plant hanger outside of Music City Thrift!
There were two people working that night. The dad was in the kitchen and the son was serving. Miss Gypsy and I brought the total to four souls in the whole place. And it stayed that way the whole time we were there.
The son was a hoot! He was really just a kid who was really bored and he put it all out there about his family and school and work. We loved him! When he wasn't hanging out at the table, Miss G and I would gawk at the houndstooth wallpaper, burgandy carpet, wall sconces and artwork then look at each other and giggle or just say, "wow".
Dad did a decent job in the kitchen. Mind you, this isn't haute cuisine. The scallopini ( veal or chicken, I forget) was standard fare but good. Bread, wine , drinks.... I guess I dropped $60. Pricey, but I don't regret it.
The retro style extends even to the plates and glassware. You won't experience anything like this anywhere else in this town!
