Continuing its transformation with popular, yet edgy, productions. – The Skinny
Founded in 1982 by Mac Pirkle with help from philanthropist Martha Ingram, Tennessee Repertory Theater's early years offered much of the expected (Shakespeare, Tennessee Williams) but also new musical works "Some Sweet Day" and Dennis DeYoung's "The Hunchback of Notre Dame." Now with David Grapes as artistic managing director, the Rep continues its transformation.
Along with successful productions of "Little Foxes" and "Wit," both starring Tandy Cronyn, TRT even staged "Cyrano de Bergerac" with Grapes in the lead. It was a critical smash. Though the 2000-01 season wasn't perfect, the slight missteps have been balanced with edgy productions such as David Sedaris' "The Santaland Diaries" and "Molly Sweeney." In 2002, look for "Mamma Mia" and "West Side Story."
TRT stages the most prominent contemporary plays of any Nashville company. Most people buy season passes, because the shows are consistently enjoyable.
