The dog I adopted from F of A was taken there by someone who saw her get hit by a car. She had a broken leg. F of A took her to the vet, nursed her back to health, and put her up for adoption.

I have since volunteered there and have seen many dogs find homes. F of A doesn't take only "cute" or "highly adoptable" dogs. They take all dogs. Which means that some of the dogs may be there for longer than others. However, all of the dogs are happy and healthy and taken care of while they are there.

My experience is all I can share – I only know that the 2 dogs I adopted from Friends of Animals happen to have been awesome. They both lived in our home for almost 14 years and both recently passed. Lola, my pitbull, slept in my bed the entire time. I had no idea that a pitbull was the most affectionate breed I've ever experienced. I have never been "behind the scenes" at the FOAF so I don't know anything that gives me authority to support or refute others' opinions.

The animals at this facility need to be rescued – • Friends of Animals is not a humane rescue.

The facts are the following:

1/ Animals have lived in small filthy, dangerous enclosures for years with little exercise and sociliazation.

2/ Small animals live in their small wood cages a minimum of 23+ hours a day.

Large dogs are walked once a week for an average of 20 minutes.

The majority of dogs live this way for years!

3/ Volunteers and the public are not allowed in the areas were the large and small dogs reside.

Large dogs are kept in isolation on the back of the property. No barking is tolerated. Bark collars have been used in the past.

4/ The City of LA in 2011 cited Friends of Animals for dangerous cages, overcrowding and other violations

5/ Friends of Animals does NOT foster any animals including the young, elderly and sick. Even experienced fosters are not considered.

They make constant excuses about how fostering has too many complications while thousands of other no-kill rescues including those who have a facility manage to foster their animals. These rescues realize how beneficial fostering is to its animals physical and mental wellbeing. The board members of FOA are paralyzed and lazy

individuals who cannot be bothered implementing a fostering program

6/ Freinds of Animals expenses a ridiculous amount of money from donations per their IRS 990 filings to lease a building in a WLA high traffic area so the animals can live in small dangerous enclosures for years. Their is no indoor play area. Walk-in potential adopters are ALWAYS turned away and told to make an appointment even if the staff is not busy.

7/ Volunteers and animals are verbally abused on a daily basis. Board members stand by and witness these altercations instigated by their kennel manager and refuse to do anything.

8/ Volunteers must constantly ask for medical attention for the animals. When they do they are made to feel like complainers. This is for minor and serious medical issues. Friends of Animals has let dogs physically suffer for years even though they have more than enough funds to care for these animals. Why is Friends of Animals taking animals putting them in insolation for years not giving them needed medical attention, not considering any foster homes for the more difficult to place animals,

not giving proper exercise and socialization to these animals and calling themselves a rescue! Friends of Animals has more financial resources and community support than thousands of other succesful rescues who do much more in terms of adoptions

fostering and making sure their animals are given a quality of life.

9/ Ex Volunteers have been legally threatened by the Friends of Animals Foundation if they post the facts about the organization on this site or any other site.

10/ The animals at Friends of Animals are suffering not because of a lack of funding but because of the arrogant, lazy and archaic decisions made by the board members.

They make excuses for everything. Keep in mind any recent improvements made by this organization were made because the board members were FORCED to make the changes NOT because they thought it was the humane thing to do for their animals

Friends of Animals needs to feel the constant pressure from the public or else the animals will continue to live their horrible lives

How many animals have suffered in the past twenty years? How many adoptions has FOA actually had in the past twenty years? Why do they not have this number in their fancy newsletters?

Do not let Friends of Animals get away with this charade any longer.

These animals have already been abandoned and now the majority will live out their lives in small enclosures with little human interaction and not receiving proper medical attention.

Shame on you Friends of Animals

Calling All Animal Lovers - Help Some Lonely Caged Animals – Please ignore any comments left by any one who states that this is a great place. They are in D-E-N-I-A-L.

These are the facts I volunteer on a regular basis.

Fact Animal Services ordered a dog be euthanized

Fact Animals have been horaded at FOA a large number for over five years

Fact Dogs are rarely walked

Fact Animals are rarely given medical treatment

Fact Animals are yelled at on a daily basis

Fact Animals live in unsanitary conditions

Fact You can verify with LA City Hall or visit Friends of Animals at the address listed above if you do not believe anything in this review.

I encourage you to volunteer to walk a dog since the staff at this shelter does not care about the health of the animals and walking a dog daily is the number 1 requirement for a dog needs on a daily basis not be be caged like a prisoner.

Fact If you do volunteer please ignore the volunteer who is: Female, over weight, pathetic, needy, over bearing diarrhea of the mouth, that no one can stand even the staff has problems with her. She is just a volunteer and thats all. She needs help.

The Animals Are Suffering – The Dogs and Cats at Friends of Animals desperately need your help.

Hundreds of dogs and cats have been horded for years at this no kill shelter.

Over twenty dogs must share cages with other dogs. The cages are cramped and small.

Dogs are lucky if they get walked once a week. The staff and officers of the organization do not walk or care if the dogs get walked.

Walking is an important form of exercise for these dogs especially the older dogs.

Since the cages are cleaned only once a day many dogs are left lying in their cages with feces and urine.

In August of 2011 Animal Services investigated the property and ordered that a Pit Bull who had been on the property for over five years be euthanized.

The poor Pit Bull had a tumor on his head the size of a grapefruit.

The dog had been in distress for months this could have been avoided if the Pit Bull had been seen by a Vet on a regular basis.

This Pit Bull also suffered from Shock Collar treatment when he barked consistently.

In April of 2011 another Pit Bull was brought to the shelter. The Pit Bull suffered for one month before a cob of corn was removed from his abdomen.

Another Pit Bull was placed in a bathroom for a year. This senior Pit Bull had to watch on a daily basis numerous people people defecate and urinate on a daily basis.

This Pit Bull was often stepped on and continuosly had splases of water from the toilet and sink splatter on her already sensitive itchy skin.

Animal Services ordered that the Pit Bull be removed from the bathroom.

In april of 2011 another dog was unable to walk or stand because of her bad arthritis. Rather than euthanize the dog. The dog was kept in an unsanitary cage often sitting in her feces and urine for long periods of time.

Numerous volunteers complained on a daily basis about taking this dog out of her misery. But the Director refused to put the dog down stating that she was O.K and that a doctor was treating her with accupuncture.

A concerned citizen in the neighborhood wrote a letter stating that they would be contatcting the proper authorites unless they took the suffering dog out of its misery.

This poor dog was euthanized a few days after

Please go and adopt a dog or cat from this Horrific Place.

Give FOA a call and let them know you do not tolerate animal cruelty.

Please do not support or give money to this organization. They have a long history of animal neglect.

If you have ever volunteered and witnessed any horrific abuse or neglect please post you comments.

In addition, if a female volunteer has bullied, harassed, or has made false accusations against you while you were volunteering with FOA post your comments here.

If you do not believe anything I have said go see for yourself.

Contact your neighbors, City Officials and Friends. The community must come together to end this horrific suffering of animals.

If you do not beileve what I have written contact LA Animal Sevices. The investigation was conducted on the last week of August 2011.

BigAnimalLover - Are you Kidding!!! – Your description of Friends of Animals is ridiculous. Everything you wrote about the rescue taking great care of its animals and how much they accomplish is not the truth.

Either your a good fiction writer or totally delusional.

You try to discredit the ex-volunteers who know the truth by saying they have an agenda.

The only agenda they have is trying to rescue the animals from the Friends of Animals facility and giving them a chance to have a good life.

Review as FOA volunteer and adopter – I adopted my dog from Friend of Animals and I've also volunteered there many times, both up in the cattery and walking the dogs. I'm very impressed with all they manage to accomplish, both in terms of the great care the animals receive and the dedication of the volunteers in walking the dogs, socializing with the cats, and doing their best to find each one the right home for their individual needs. Every time I'm there dogs are going out for walks, volunteers are taking animals for vet visits, people are dropping off donations -- it's absolutely inspirational to see how much they get accomplished in a day over there.

When I met a dog I decided to adopt they couldn't have been nicer, they checked out my home to make sure it was safe, and they gave me lots of support and great advice. Every time I come in to volunteer they want to know how my little angel is doing, clearly they don't feel their job is over when the dog or cat goes home, their commitment to each animal is really touching.

Plus it's just fun to volunteer there, the dogs and cats are so happy (except of course for the ones who come from scary stuations, but the staff is always helpful on how to help scared dogs and cats feel more comfortable). I love this place - can you tell? If you're looking to adopt or just give back a little by volunteering I can't recommend Friends of Animals highly enough!

Volunteers Needed to Help These Dogs! – The story of Lucy, a blind deaf Manchester terrier with a bad skin condition is typical of dogs at Friends of Animals. She was kept in a small, flea infested cage for approximately 23 plus hours a day. I was a volunteer that started in October 20, 2010. While walking Lucy, I noticed she was shaking her head a lot and when we would stop she was scratching her ears. I mentioned this right away to many at FOA, but was ignored and told it was because she was blind and deaf. A few weeks later, again I told them that I felt she needed to see a vet. They said she had been seen and she was fine. After approximately five months, I told someone I was going to take her by myself to a friend who is a vet in the Marina. Then finally she was taken on 3/25/11 and her diagnosis was a bilateral ear infection. Medicine was given for her ears and her skin condition. Imagine this poor dog, being blind, deaf and having a very painful ear infection and scratching herself bloody, in a cage to defecate and urinate for 23 hours daily. This is when my conscience told me I must adopt Lucy and her cage partner, a 4 ? lb Chihuahua named Hershey.

Hershey has his own story. When I walked him he was very bow legged, and not walking properly. I asked what was wrong with his knees or hips.

Most Honest Animal Descriptions and Staff Helpfulness – I have adopted several dogs from FOAF. All I can say is this is a rescue facility with a huge heart. They have the most dedicated animals loving volunteers ever! As a new Pet custodian I had many fears and questions on how to raise a healthy and happy dog. The folks here helped me with the many calls I made after the adoption for their expert advice on how to correct situations. They were completely honest in letting me know the dogs' habits, likes, dislikes and how to make them fit into my home. They deliver all pets which I think is fantastic for everyone's safety and to make sure the animal and family are the right fit.
