Cupboard Restaurant – I've found the food to be good most of the time, but sometimes it is not that good. Too much garlic on Italian Spinach makes it hard to eat. The baked catfish is pickled with salt...sometimes dry and very tough. The yeast rolls and cornbread are very good. Northern Beans are sometimes good and other times it's just mush floating in soupy liquid. I never know what to expect because they are inconsistent in the quality of the food.
Never again! – Our waiter, a flamboyant male, was conversing with a friend of his less than 5 feet from our table. He was discussing a sexual experience and laughing. When we complained to the manager, they didn't seem to find it that unusual or disturbing. He was "talked to." At least 2 other tables overheard this grotesque conversation. Another server, a female, smelled like an ashtray. This was NOT a family restaurant and we will never spend our money there again.
Simply the Best – I am a southerner born and raised. The food is very well seasoned but not spicy. I loved it and tried to eat there everyday during my stay in Memphis. I can't say enough about this place from the corn bread muffins to the corn pudding and chicken and stuffiing it was all wonderful.
Totally Over-Rated – It was o...k...
This was NOT the best homecooking that I've had. I tried them twice and I still came out with a puzzled look on my face. Just my opinion.
Get in line--people flock for the Southern-style specialties found at this Memphis mainstay. – The Scene
This ever-popular restaurant has been around since 1943, but changed digs in 2000, moving to an old Shoney's a few blocks away. The dining room is larger, service is still friendly and parking isn't a problem, but even with the big space, people line up just about every night to get their hands on Southern, home-style grub.
Garden-fresh vegetables, cold iced tea and homemade breads are just some of the reasons to go. Choose from entr?e specials like catfish, thick slices of ham and moist fried chicken. You'll find heaping plates of purple hull peas, candied yams, seasoned turnip greens or tender-crisp snap beans. The fried green tomatoes are crispy with just enough salt and pepper and the creamy macaroni and cheese is a must.
Just like Mama's – What can I say? I'm a Southerner, born and raised, and I know home cooking when I have. The fried chicken alone is worth visiting for.
Good Country Cookin' – Just like Grandmas cooking. Pick a meat (fried chicken if you're smart,) then fill the rest of your plate with vegetables and fresh bread. Creamed corn, collard greens, and other southern standbys will bring a tear to your eye. Just dont forget the sweet tea. I havent been since it changed locations, but I imagine its just as good. Try it. Youll be back.
