The Barbecue Blahs – For some reason I just can't seem to find great BBQ in Dallas. There are some wonderful places in the surrounding cities, but in Dallas proper I'm struggling. This weekend I visited Baker Ribs on Greenville Ave. The location is a little strange and the parking can be awkard, but I'm willing to deal with inconvenience for great food. Unfortunately I didn't leave feeling satisfied.

I ordered the Rib Plate which came with a generous helping of 6-8 ribs and 2 sides. The ribs themselves were tasty, but not juicy. The smokey flavor made them edible but the meat was tough to work off of the bone and that's never a good thing. Now to the sides.... My corn was a sad, not quite ready to eat cob that had lost all of it's sweetness but my potato salad was out of this world good. If I had not tried the potato salad, I think I would write this place off entirely. It's a yummy mayo based salad with lots of dill, which makes it seem a tad "upscale". I would venture to Bakers just for this one dish. So what was the most dissapointing thing about Baker's? The SAUCE!!!!! Why is it so hard to get a good BBQ sauce? To me the sauce is the thing that seperates good BBQ from bad, no matter what the meat is doing. Baker's had only one sauce to choose from and it tasted like glorified ketchup. My recommendation is that they jazz it up a bit or at least offer 2 or 3 versions of the sauce with one leaning toward spicy and one sweet.

So, there you have it. It was just okay.
