As of November 1, 2012 we are the new owners and we have fresh paint, fresh attitudes and fresh faces. We intend to maintain this business as a traditional barber shop and will begin offering straight razor shaves by mid December. In additon, we have extended our hours. M-F 8:30 until 7P.M. Sat 8:30 until 5:30 and Sun 8:30 until 3:30. Come check out our Barber shop quartet on Sat Nov 17 and the full chorus on Dec 15. We look foward to offering you our very best. This is not a metrosexual salon. This is a barbershop. – First of all, my credentials: I am a professional pilot with two small children at home. I get my haircut whilst "on the road" because my time at home is precious. I have visited barbershops in at least 20 states off the top of my head, from Spokane to SoCal to FL to NJ. Also, I've had haircuts on street corners in Mexico and in a tiny little shop in the walled city of Dubrovnik, Croatia. My command of Serbo-Croatian is limited, but we managed to do quite well, hvala!
The barbershop in question is sparsely decorated: it has a tv, a few magazines, two mirrored walls, a row of chairs, and cheap wood panelling. They don't serve wine or offer foot massages. You go there, sit down, wait your turn, get your haircut, pay, and leave. It's the same way at barbershops across the country, from rural Texas to downtown Chicago.
The barber who served me, (older gentleman) while friendly, did not try to become my best friend. That's ok, I have a dog. He asked me what I wanted, I told him what I wanted, and he complied quickly, silently, and with skill that comes from years of plying a trade. He gently positioned my head to the angle he wanted it, and I kept it there for him. He was obviously very meticulous, and very deft with clippers, comb, and scissors. The two other barbers working in the shop at the time seemed just as meticulous. This is not a shop where they rush to get you out, this is a shop where they work quickly until the job is done and done well.
Because I am able to keep my head still while getting a haircut, I didn't get yelled at. Because I was able to tell the barber how I wanted my haircut (I wear my hair in a pompadour with a part on the left, and very tight on the sides with just a shadow at the bottom) I was happy with my haircut.
Reading the other reviews on this page, I have this advice: If you have your feelings easily hurt, grow a pair. If you need your barber to be all warm and fuzzy and be your friend, get a dog. If you don't like traditional barber style cuts, go to a salon and get your haircut by a 23 yr old chick right out of beauty school. If you have a hard time getting what kind of haircut you want, learn to describe what kind of haircut you want. Now, if you want to get a good haircut with a straight razor trim around the edges, pay $19, and not look like a dirty hippy or a hipster doofus, check it out.
Where did my hair go? – I'd call this place the Den of the Hair "Not-Sees" (say it to yourself, out loud), but that would imply that, extremely bad attitudes aside, they actually know how to give a haircut. Like how the Soup Not-See on "Seinfeld" was what the French would call a "Batard" but made really good soup, right? Not the case here. Not only are they almost comically rude (all of the comments above are 100% spot-on accurate), but in this shop of of thugs, they DO NOT demonstrate any "barberly" skills. Both of the times I went there, I asked for a short trim, and I emerged with a military buzz-cut. My wife laughed her head off at me -- after she stopped crying. I could go into details, but, again, those reading this review need to understand that the above comments paint a very complete picture of how this business is run. So, gentlemen, mothers of small boys, and everyone else: avoid this place at all cost. Hopefully it will be gentrified out of existence by the Whole Foods, Trader Joe's, and Peet's Coffee between which it is somehow squeezed. Until that happy day, caveat emptor!
Hostile, intimidating, and discriminatory customer service – I have received hostile, intimidating, and discriminatory treatment from this barbershop, from two out of the three barbers. The final straw came today. I was standing (because I have a bad back) and one barber, in front of everyone there said, "sit down, you are messing up everything, I'm about to kick you out." I said I was standing as I have a bad back, and I was not disturbing anyone. He said, "if you can't sit, you can't get a haircut."
These people have no respect for human dignity.
Unprofessional and Rude: A bad place to go! – I am an aficionado of barber shops the world over and was happy to find the Napa Bel Aire Barber shop. However, as a local resident, I was shocked at how unfriendly, unprofessional and careless the barbers and manager are here. While they have the appearance of being kind gentlemen, they are far from it!
For the first time in my life, I was yelled at by a barber for moving my head. Not once--but three times he raised his voice at me for moving my head slightly. He told me to stop "acting like a moving target and stop looking in the mirror." Now, I can understand the need to keep one's head still while getting a haircut--but to be yelled at and lambasted for it?!
I went home, after giving the barber his $19 and $2 gratuity and called the manager. He proceeded to scream at me for even thinking that I might have a problem with this behavior citing the need for speediness for each of his 40-50 customers and "everyone to be clean and not move their heads." The cleanliness issue aside [I am a professor and architect having come from work], I believe any customer at a barber shop should not be treated like a 3 year old and be given the haircut for which they asked.
The manager on the phone continued to yell at me saying "what do you want us to do? Indulge the whims of every one of our customers?" All I did was move my head...
Folks, the Barber Shop of Napa Valley should be cited for absolutely rude service and even poorer haircuts.
Terrible experience – I was not going to write anything here until I saw some of the comments above. I had almost the same experience with this barber and it was terrible. I've never been to a barber shop where you get so much attitude. I was planning on never going back and then I saw the postings above and realized I had to confirm what they were saying based on my experience. The guy here with the tatooes is absolutely terrible. DO NOT go here, DO NOT give them your money. It is a terrible scence with the worst customer service ever. I don't want some guy like that getting clippers anywhere near my head, you never know what he'll do at any moment. He went from being totally calm to almost irrational and intimidating in a matter of seconds. I can't say it enough, if you have a choice go somewhere else.
Same experience as above! – Strangely it's true. I've been getting haircuts for for well over 30 years and have never been told "I'm moving around too much" But this barber(the one who looks like a reject from the Miami Ink Show ), told me just that. I vote with my feet and will go somewhere else next time. Just a FYI...BTW I would have chalked up this experience to the "barber" having a bad day or something, but I saw this first reviewer's comments when looking for a barber and quite honestly did not pay much attention...just a one negative review, right? Well make this a big and official SECOND on that....Don't go here unless you like rude service and bad haircuts...rating -10.
terrible service – a nice day for a haircut with my son turned what appear to be a pleasant barber into a condescending, rude, ill mannered, and small individual with poor customer service.
after noticing the first cuts to be extremely short, i became a little nervous with this style. i mentioned that it was getting a little short. his response in a loud voice was that it was my fault for moving so much and that the customer is not always right. i had to leave to save my hair and save my son from such disrespectful behavior. I left feeling sad for him.
