Horrible Bed, and Nonchalant Owner! – My husband and I booked a 2 night stay at Walden Cottage in July. The cottage itself was fine, and we enjoyed our afternoon watching TV/movies from the pull-down screen attached to the bed.
However, when we went to bed at night, we were unable to sleep because of the poor quality of the bed. The mattress was old and sunken in, did not provide much support, and bounced and squeeked with every move. The bed did have a feathertop, but it was the underlying mattress that was the problem. We got approximately 2 hours of sleep the entire night. We have stayed at many othere B&B's (including ones in Napa) and have never had this problem.
When we brought this to the Old World Inn's attention the following morning, they did make offers to try to "adjust" the bed (i.e. removing the feathetop/putting a board under the mattress) or move us to another room for our second night. But we were so exhausted from lack of sleep the first night, we opted to go home in lieu of a second sleepless night. We had to skip all our planned activities for Napa that day because we were so tired. The innkeeper refused to issue us a refund for the second night due to their cancellation policy. For $295 a night, I expected a much better bed, and better service.
Charming Victoriana in the wine country. – The Scene
This 1906 Victorian is comprised of an eclectic combination of architectural elements, such as wood shingles, clinker brick and leaded and beveled glass. Wide, shady porches provide a welcoming touch, and overall the house looks as if it came straight out of the pages of a children's storybook. The inn is a short walk to the historical center of Napa and just minutes from many famous wineries.
The guest rooms feature painted antique furniture, claw-foot bathtubs, handmade quilts and French Country décor. The parlor is dominated by dark green and gold, which complements the redwood, and is usually adorned with a roaring fire and soft, French folk music. It is a nice place for gathering with fellow guests and sampling a local vintage during the evening wine and cheese hour.
See The Stars From Bed – The room was incredible, groceries and restaurants were within walking distance, the woodwork of the Inn was beautifully textured. We would recommend this place to anyone. Their wine tasting session was unbelievable. Chocolate desserts appeared to be a specialty of theirs. And of course breakfast - not just for a sweet tooth (real food is available).
It feels like home the moment you walk in the door. We will definitely go back - it is the best (and you don't have to get into your car for activity (esp. the central location, walking distance to shopping, restaurants, historic Old Town Napa, the Wine Train, and COPIA). And they are perfectly located for trips to both Napa and Sonoma wineries (there are dozens of both Napa and Sonoma wineries within a 20 min drive).
In fact we got reservations as Christmas presents for our kids (and their spouses).
GREAT PERSONAL TOUCH – The accomodation and the service was FANTASTIC. Lana the Innkeeper and Sam the proprietor will whip up a splendid breakfast in the morning. You must not miss the chocolate buffet they serve in the early evenings, They are to die for (not kidding). The ambiance is very romantic and the rooms that we stayed in was GREAT ask for the cottage room!
Sam gives great suggestions if you want to go to some off the beaten path outside of winery. Try Bodega bay!
Chocolate Lovers Paradise – After a long day of visiting vineyards, what a great place to come back to. Beginning at 3 with tea and cookies, followed by cheese and wine, and then the chocolate buffet in the evening, you won't be hungry for a second. The rooms are lovely. I stayed in the Degas room and now booked Monet's Garden for my next trip in the fall. The place is cozy, romantic, friendly and located within minutes of vineyards. Oh, and I must mention the breakfast which consists of pastries, a hot dish like a quiche or a frittata, a fresh fruit plate and the most wonderful fresh tangerine juice.
