Big Broadway shows frequently roll through. And you can usually get tickets for fewer than $30, if you get them early enough.

How to Experience an Event at the Hobby Center

1. Don't park your car there, unless you want to park on the 4th (top) level, because the 20.00 valet parking takes up the 1st 3 levels, and the parking still costs you 8.00. Drive a little past there to parking #2 for 7.00 and be able to park on ground level. Parking on the 4th level also causes a 30 plus minute wait, while the valets retrieves the paying patrons cars on the 1st thru 3rd level, while everyone else either waits for the one elevator going to the 4th level, or braving the hike on the steps to 4th level.

2. Bring a or several blankets to enjoy the show. I suspect they purposely hike the air-conditioning up to artic levels, to sell the 35.00 fleece blankets with the 'Lion King' logo. We actually felt the cold air blowing and our hair flying in the wind in the mezzanine, and wishing the show would hurry-up and be over so we could get warm again.

3. Bring your own binoculars, because they too are a 5.00 RENTAL, requiring your license as security.

4. the obvious here: make sure you eat and drink before entering the theater, because just like any other venue, the prices are inflated for food and drinks. 3.00 for water, 4.00 for juice, 3.00 for chips, etc.

This experience which was a matinee, by the way, is not for the unprepared person on a budget, which prompted me to share this.

Great Entertainment but BAD FOOD! – I attended an event presented by Diva's World Entertainment on Sunday 4/17/11 in Zilkha Hall. First, there was no mention that there was a reception before attending a BRUNCH which meant that guests were kept waiting for more than an hour before being allowed into the hall. There was no seating to accommodate those who had no idea they would be standing for that length of time and the lobby has poor air circulation for a crowd. When we entered the hall, we were escorrted onto the stage where the brunch, entertainment and guests were all contained. The buffet was haulted another 10 minutes because the Chef was still preparing the eggs benedict so until that was completed, we had to continue to wait. The area where the food presentation took place was poorly lit but when we saw the buffet, we knew why - the cesar salad was drenched with dressing - to the point of being limp. The fruits were the traditional selections (pineapple, cantelope, berries), pre-packaged salmon was displayed with a few topping selections, there were unidentified foods in warmers and a carving station. The first time around, we completely missed the desserts as they were in the corner almost behind the curtain! BTW, the desserts were better than the main fair. Coffee cups were PASSED OUT to the guests but at no point did any server bring us coffee - at no point during the actual brunch were Mimosa's served (only during the reception). I picked up several sugar packets to sweeten my tea only to find them ALL dirty and clearly pre-used (dropped in something wet so the contents were stuck together) which was creepy when you consider you're already eating in the dark! And, to top it all off, during an excellent solo by Bobby Lyle, you can hear the kitchen staff stacking the dishes! Shame on you Hobby Center - Diva's World deserved better!

An innovative $100 million complex thrusts Houston into the international theater spotlight. – The Background
An elaborate, spanking-new performing arts center fills a city void, providing two elegant theaters generated specifically for theater and musical performances. Since its May 2002 opening, the towering roofline and ornate halls have made this spectacular vision a cultural hub and progressed the city's goal to be a force in the 21st-century fine arts community.

The Experience
Sarofim Hall, a 2,600-seat theater acoustically designed for touring Broadway productions, is home to "Theatre Under the Stars" as well as the "Broadway in Houston" series, staging shows such as "Chicago" and "The Full Monty." Zilkha Hall, an intimate 500-seat venue with full orchestra pit, showcases smaller touring groups as part of the "Uniquely Houston" series that celebrates diversity. Artista, the latest from Chef Michael Cordúa of Churrascos and Américas fame, offers lunch and dinner, as well as post-show desserts, appetizers and beverages.
