This is a restaurant where you can get the healthiest fresh vegetable dishes and or fish, to the most calorie loaded stuff imaginable. My wife and I are on fat conscious diets and we go for the healthy side of the offerings. But no matter what your diet, everything is very good. One warning though, no credit cards so bring cash or a check, they are not happy when you only have credit cards.
Cleburne Cafeteria for holiday meals – For the last two years our family has ordered from Cleburne's for holiday meals. Each time the turkey has been juicy and succulent; the casseroles have been delicious and the fruit salad comprised of chunks of expensive and ripe fruit. It is a little pricey, but it's worth not spending a day and a half in the kitchen and the family cooks voted that it's more than worth our time and energy. The only drawback is having to pick it up on Friday for a Sunday meal since they are closed Saturday. It is worth every penny. We're doing it again for 2012 Easter.
SAVE YOUR PALLET AND $$$$$$ – THis was the worst dinning experience I have had in 15 years of living in Houston!! $22 for lunch plus charged for items I did not purchase. The food was disgusting. The I would have had a better dinning experience at Mcdonalds or Jack in the box!!
The Best Cafeteria in the U.S. – Since we discovered the Cleburne, we have not been back to Luby's , Furr's or Picadilly. The secret in going to any Cafeteria is carefully picking, what is fresh. This poses a problem for many. The selection of main course meals at Cleburne's is incredible. Cleburnes has plenty of fresh food choices that are healthy and reasonably priced. I recommend this place whole heartedly. We have eaten in many Cafeteria's across this country, and the Cleburne is deserving of a 5 Star rating!!
OVERPRICED TASTELESS FOOD! – I had been a few years ago and was not impressed, however friends that had not been wanted to go there so I said ok. My food was $2 more than the posted price and when I pointed it out they informed me they had a price increase but had not changed it on the board yet. I paid the inflated price and after two bites took the food back and got my money back. The country fried steak was tough and totally tasteless. Spend your money someplace else. I'm a native Houstonian and I can tell you this place is over priced and the food is terrible, just as I had remembered from the previous visit! My friends said they wished they had listened to me and not insisted on going there. It's just plain bad!
Good Food, but Fattening! – If you are on a diet, this is not the place to go. Most food items are full of 'fat grams' and we will not be able to eat here very often. We enjoyed the food and most everything we got tasted good. The turkey and dressing is wonderful. Food portions are big. I also got the Coconut Pie, but wasn't pleased with that.
Make a note that they don't take a Debit or Credit card. Found that strange, as most places do. TAKE CASH WITH YOU! I found this VERY inconvienent!!! They will take a check. Had to wait by 'take out food' section to write check. They need to move the take out food area as it gets in the way when you leave the serving line and want to get to a table.
Local favorite prospers with inexpensive, reliable comfort food. – In Short
This popular, non-chain cafeteria burned down a few years ago, much to the despair of its loyal clientele. But the Mickelis family rebuilt it better than ever, and so Cleburne (named for the downtown street where it first originated) endures. It is known for squash casserole, broiled chicken, carrot salad and turkey with dressing. Popular among the older set, of course, but also much liked by area families.
Not what we wanted – We went to this restaurant based on all of the good reviews and found that we were extremely disappointed. We thought it would be better than Luby's or Furrs and more of a modern take on cafeterias, but it was not. This is a typical cafeteria style eatery with very few healthy items available. They DO NOT take credit cards so make sure you remember that before you go. The prices were much higher than we expected and we ended up spending $20 each for what tasted like $10 food.
YUMMMMM – This is my favorite place! Some of the best "home cooking". We walked in thinking...Luby's. We sat down to eat thinking ...Luby's. We tasted, and thought...this is no Luby's! And the deserts taste sooo good and are so big. We felt greedy just having on the table with us.
Best in Houston – I've been going to Cleburne for over 15 years on a regular basis and have never had a bad meal. Fresh fruits and veggies, consistently high quality entrees and more-than-generous portions. The only reason to avoid Cleburne is if you are on a diet--the desserts are first-rate. There is no comparison between this privately owned cafeteria and other generic corporate ones. Recommended without reservation!
