Charming – I stumbled into this bookstore today. They had a fabulous selection. The gentlemen who run the bookstore are top-notch!
A vintage, well-preserved bookstore that can accommodate the casual browser and delight the dedicated book lover. – The Scene
As dark and solemn as a church, Detering really is a bibliophile's dream. Persian carpets hush the floors. Used and rare hardcovers line the walls. The place even smells sagacious and important, like the lovely, old, wonderful books it houses.
Downstairs are hundreds of used hardcovers in excellent condition that can often be had for less than the price of a brand-new paperback. But upstairs, behind lock and key, are awe-inspiring books: an illustrated "Book of Hours" dated 1515 and hand-printed on vellum; the first complete atlas of Italy, composed by Giovanni Magonni in 1620. These books are one-of-a-kind and priced in the low five figures. It also carries rare popular fiction: A signed first edition of "Interview with the Vampire" goes for a measly $1,650. The staff knows what it has, so call if you're looking for something specific. But the store is even better as a place to browse when you need a respite from the city.
