Such a lovely ambiance and great food/service with plenty of veggie options. The private jasmine room is a birthday brunch must!

Great place for parties & meetings! – Our company has been coming to Baba Yega's for years for gatherings such as Christmas parties & annual meetings. We always recieve great food & service. The buffets are always plentiful & delicious. Jane & her crew are always so welcoming & helpful. We have also purchased appetizers & bite size desserts for open houses. Those trays are always pretty, fresh, & delectable.

Always Great!! – I have been a patron of Baba Yega for almost thirty years. Since I have moved out of the Montrose area,I don't eat there as often as i would like. However, after eating there this past weekend, I commented to a friend that the amazing thing is that the food has remained, delicious, plentiful, and relatively inexpensive. (Hats off to management and staff!) I had the Chicken Basil Pasta Salad which was great with plenty of chicken and more than I could eat. The service was, as usual, quick and cheerful. I also enjoy the Vegetarian Meatloaf for which I would like to have the recipe. Whenever I'm in the Montrose area I usually dine at Baba Yega.

The last reviewer sounds just as "toxic" as the alleged fish her friend was served. I have been going to Baba Yega practically since it opened in the 70's. The staff is always friendly and fun. It's a great place to take people b/c the menu is so eclectic - awesome burgers, good, fresh vegetarian food and wonderful entrees that can compete with any restaurant in the neighborhood. The wilted spinach salad with grilled salmon is the best salad I've ever had in Houston. I also recommend the chicken caesar or the veggie club - even if you're not vegetarian - it's amazing. When other restaurants are becoming more the same as the world becomes more Corporate, Baba Yega is a one-of-a-kind neighborhood gem.

Avoid the "Special" - It's probably Toxic! – We visited this establishment before and wanted to share it with our family for a celebration. The service was wonderful and the wait staff gracious. We are a food service family for over 20 years. Seafood was our specialty and the standards were very high for food safety. After beginning our meal with appetizers all was well....then the main course arrived. Within minutes of ingesting the "Special ".....one family member was so sick that we had to leave the resataurant. It of course ruined the evening and the money lost was a mere irritant compared to the lack of professionalism shown by the management and owner. After a call back to the establishment we were told the fish was removed from the line. The owner denies that but it was said by the manager on duty. The family member is fine now ...but after having over 10 hours of severe cramping , pounding headache, and weakness in her muscles..... not even able to stand..........I cannot imagine a worse way to celebrate!! So...we had possible scromboid poisioning from a piece of fish that was bad and called a "Special"............I will not suggest this restaurant to anyone ever again...but I will warn everyone I can to save their money and go to a Safe restaurant to eat. The owners lack of caring and blatent rudeness towards us is inexcusable and he should be ashamed and embarrassed at the entire incident.

Bad food. – I have loved Baba yaga for a long time. However, several months ago I had three meals in a row that were horrible. I don't know what has happened to their food preparation. It used to be pretty good. My last three experinces were overcooked tune steak, fish cooked in grease that was very old, and roasted chicken that was so over cooked it was black. I really regret it, because I have always liked going there. however after three bad experiences, I don't any more. This is not just my opinion, but is the opinion of everyone I have talked to about the matter. I write with the hope they will change and be the resturant I really liked/

Scrumptious meals - comfortable atmosphere – All 4 of us are pescetarians, and we loved the food that we ordered. The brie appetizer with fresh roasted garlic is to die for. I LOVED my club sandwich (with "smoked turkey style gluten & fakin' bacon"), and the faux meatloaf was pretty good too. We were seated promptly, and the service was awesome!

Healthy choices, cool environment – Since moving to Houston, this has been one of my favorite places to visit - either with friends, business, or a date. The set-up is unique, and cozy. I covert the 2 tables nearest the front fireplace in the winter, and the tables facing the back garden during the summer.

Excellent food choices, with a healthy bent. Plenty of options if you're feeling vegetarian or vegan. I understand the place has been around for at least 40 years, but was much smaller before. Well, their expansion was done excellently. Definitely a Houston institution, to which I'll keep coming back again and again.

Great Avacado Burger – This was my first visit and definitly will not be my last. I love the ambiance of this resturant. I visited on a weeknight for dinner and sat in the back facing the garden and cois pond area very nice and intimate. Our server was a little slow to take our order. She was attentive when she was around but wasn't around much. The food was great. The food was brought to the table in a timely manner. The avacado burger is to die for I thouroughly enjoyed it. The Mojito was not up to par there was minced mint leaves throughout the drink that I kept sucking up through the straw. Overall I enjoyed the dining experience and look forward to returning.

My Favorite Place!!! – If I could give this place 10 stars I would! I have been coming here for about 6 years now. I just thought I would put my two cents in and tell you how wonderful it is if you haven't been before. Food portions are plentiful and the brunch is to die for. Not only do you feel satisfied when you leave, you also know that you weren't fed trans fats and poor quality food. Healthy, nourishing and delicious food is what you will find here. The waiters don't hound you, they are discrete and helpful. Don't pass up the potato salad and for fun try the peanut butter ice cream cake (I think that is what it is?) If it is nice outside have lunch out back around the courtyard. Couldn't ask for much more!

Snitty waiters – Three of my grown children and I went here on a beautiful weekday to celebrate my birthday. Unfortunately, our waiter was horribly surly and seemed genuinely offended to have to serve us. When we tried to ignore his bad attitude, he seemed to become more determined to try to spoil our time together, actually slamming things on our table.

We ordered a Philly sandwich, two of the much-raved about smoked turkey and brie sandwiches, and the wilted spinach salad with grilled salmon. The brie was tiny and melted only if you consider "not cold" to equal "melted". The salmon on my salad was burned -- as in charcoal around the edges and tough all the way through. When that was sent back, it returned as almost raw; which may have been okay, since I like sushi. However, this was raw, previously frozen, mushy salmon. The spinach was wilted and overwhelmed by dressing, the two olives obviously canned - yuck! Rather than hassle the snitty Robert G. to take it back again, I just decided to focus on the pleasure of dining with my children and look forward to dessert.

Desserts were good, the coffee was unremarkable. The flan was truly heavenly, the tiramasu scrumptious, and the carrot cake above average, though cold.

Before we left, one of my sons stepped into the courtyard to smoke a cigarette -- our waiter took him an ashtray, though there was already one outside. I left my credit card on the table inside, then went to join my son. Rather than bringing the card outside for my signature, the snitty waiter returned it to the table inside. This was characteristic of the small slights visited on our table all afternoon.

I got the impression it was the family character of our group which was offensive to the waitstaff. That is a shame. We are all adults, completely capable of appreciating the beautiful courtyard, good food, and pleasant companionship. Homophilia is just as offensive as homophobia.
