One of Houston's prized possessions. You can come here every week and still find something new to look at. And, it's always free.

Houston Treature – The Menils left such a wonderful legacy to the people of Houston. Their namesake museum is spacious, interesting, and free. It is surrounded by the chapels, lots of greenery & trees. I wish there was a beautiful small cafe serving drinks, coffee, light snacks on/near the grounds in walking distance. I would like to see more music, such as chamber orchestras performing on the lawn or in the foyer, maybe a little more showcasing of local artists in one of the many small houses/offices surrounding the museum.

Incredible works by Maggrite – It's amazing how many people I know who have lived in Houston for several years and have never visited this great museum. There are some great works by surrealist painter Renee Maggrite, among pieces by Warhol (yes, even have the Campbell's Soup can), and Leger. Great place to visit on a sunny Houston weekend. And don't forget to bring food to take a picnic on the park across the museum. Makes for a memorable date!

The impressive building houses a vast and unique collection of contemporary art and pieces from antiquity. – The Scene
The late John and Dominique de Menil established this quietly stunning museum in 1987 to exhibit their expansive and eclectic collection of fine art. Located smack-dab in the middle of the Museum District, the Menil compound also includes the Cy Twombly Gallery, Rothko Chapel, the Menil Collection Bookstore (where you can buy just about any kind of art book you can imagine, posters of past exhibits, funky-cool postcards and toys galore) and the Byzantine Fresco Chapel.

The Collection
The museum features a handful of special exhibits each year; recent exhibits include a vibrating living room that you can rearrange yourself; a blinding display of neon art; and an extensive exploration of the friendship and working relationship between Marcel Duchamp and Joseph Cornell, which included such minutiae as 50-year-old Christmas cards. Great for a leisurely weekend afternoon, especially during the hottest summer months.

The Menil Is Nice – The only downside to this multi-genre museum is that the exhibits rarely change so you cant visit it that often unless your going to see one of your fave pieces.

Place to relax – I reviewed its architecture in the Museum district category, so here let me say that unlike most museums this one is not at all crowded its a quiet restful place to spend some time with art and relax. Best of all its Free.
