A stable, successful and bold theater that's not afraid to take chances with its programming. – The History
When Rob Bundy came aboard as artistic director in late 1996, Stages' future was hanging in the balance. Both a dismal financial situation and a high turnover of artistic directors contributed to the theater's shakiness, but Bundy came in and cleaned house. With its new cachet, Stages is able to produce riskier stuff, with the benefit of being a professional, Equity theater with enhanced production values. As a professional, mid-size theater, Stages can include more avant-garde material in its season, mostly off-Broadway hits.
The facility includes two theaters: the Arena Stage (seats 230) and the Thrust Stage (seats 175). The company also boasts a robust children's program, Earlystages, that combines high-level productions with outreach and education. Bundy and company's hard work gives Houston living proof that the Alley's not the only game in town when it comes to quality theater.
