Great place, Must have the black cod! – Great restaurant and outstanding service! My wife and I went there and we both had the cod. It lived up to the hype. We also had the green garlic soup Whig was good as well. It is a little pricy but comparable to the other restaurants in the Napa area. Only complaint is that it was a little difficult to find at first as there's no big sign outside. But I would highly recommend!
Worst wine service ever – I've been to Terra a number of times, and always enjoyed the food and ambiance. The wine list is diverse and thoughtfully chosen. The most recent time I and my girlfriend went, however, we had the rudest wine service experience we have ever had in any restaurant, anywhere.
We ordered an $80 bottle of Pernand-Vergelesses, and upon opening it, realized that it was just slightly corked. Our waiter whisked the bottle away, only to return a minute later with the same bottle, saying that the manager said that the wine was definitely fine. We were told that we could enjoy that bottle, or a bottle of another wine, should we desire, but that we could not have another bottle of the same wine, since the manager was sure we just didn't like it. Never in many years of restaurant-going have either of us been told we couldn't have a replacement bottle of wine. When we spoke with the manager, he told us he was sure we were wrong, and that he didn't want to have to take a second bottle of the wine back. We tried to be gracious, saying that everyone has different thresholds of perception for TCA (the chemical responsible for corked wine), to which he snapped, "I know, and mine's very good," practically spitting in our faces. Only when we offered to keep the second bottle even if it was the same would he allow us to get the wine we had ordered. The second bottle was fantastic, completely different, and the food was lovely, but we had lost our taste for the meal.
My girlfriend and I are both wine professionals, and in this case, the wine WAS corked -- but that shouldn't matter -- the customer should always be right. (The distributor usually pays for the sent-back bottles, anyway). It's sad, this is a restaurant we really liked, but we won't be going back.
ONE OF MY FAVORITE IN THE NAPA VALLEY – Terra is one of my favorite restaurants in the Napa Valley and I've dined there about 10 times in the last 3 years. The a la carte menu is consistently delicious, and the wine list has a good variety (though not particularly extensive). They don't have a tasting menu, so I like to call ahead and pre-arrange a tasting menu -- they're happy to accomodate. It's also one of the most romantic restaurants in the Napa Valley. The service is professional, attentive and unobtrusive. Don't miss dining at Terra.
For an occasion – We enjoyed a great dinner at Terra to celebrate my wife's birthday. The food was very well done - the oysters had hints of southern comfort cooking but was delicate and delicious as were the lamb T-bone steaks. My wife said the fish was great and despite not ordering a desert they brought out a scoop of ice cream with a candle on it! Crowd is largely successful baby boomers.
great place! – You absolutely must try their Black Cod!!! It's a signature dish and I'm still thinking about it two weeks later. Can't remember what else I had during that meal but just the cod is worth coming back for.
unbelievably delicious – My boyfriend and I spent 4 days in the wine country for his birthday and Terra was my first choice for our first night's dinner. My boyfriend had the grilled dry-aged ribeye steak "tagliata". I had the sauteed Hokkaido scallops and lobster with garlic mashed potatoes. We had Tiramisu for dessert and it was very good too. The server was very knowledgeable of their menu and and the ambience is romantic. The stone wall gave us the feeling of old world Napa. However, the paintings on the abstract paintings need to be replaced. The border or sides of the frame looked like it had been soaked in water and dried out which was tacky for the dramatic lighting style in the dining room.
Tucked away in an historic stone building, this remarkable restaurant offers serene fine dining with an Asian flair. – The Scene
White tablecloths and large floral arrangements complement rustic fieldstone stone walls, large arched windows and terra cotta tile floors in the two elegant dining rooms. Well-groomed waiters in white shirts and ties offer helpful information about the diverse menu.
Chef Hiro Sone hails from Japan, but he has spent most of his career as a chef in the United States. No surprise that his menu, which features seasonal local produce, shows Asian, French and Italian influences. Entrees range from broiled sake-marinated seabass to housemade lobster tortelloni to braised oxtail. Oversized white plates with artistic presentations are reminiscent of the chef's formative years spent working with Wolfgang Puck at Spago restaurant in Los Angeles.
Outstanding experience – Terra was the best dining experience I have had in the bay area. This place was even better than our previous night at Fringale, which was excellent. The food was fantastic, serving many inventive fish and meat dishes. The salmon tartar appetizer was outstanding. The salmon curry entree was done perfect. I really enjoyed the lobster and the pork chop as well. Overall, it does not get much better. I little pricey but worth it.
terra lives up to it's hype – I went to terra with 6 peopel this wekeend and everything was delicious and the service was very friendly and unobtrusive. i would recommend it for a nice meal in napa and the location just off the main drag is a nice walk ( a few blocks) form downtown st helena. we especially liekd hte lobster avacado appetizer, squab entree, and uni-foie gras dish. i would skip the desserts next time (tera misu and rhubard pie were average)
