What Happened To Mama's Cafe? – Seriously, what happened to my beloved Mama's Cafe? Husband and I were there last night for dinner and everything was horrible. We ordered their famous fried mushrooms for appetizer, it was soggy. I ordered the Chicken Fried Chicken Salad, cucumbers were soggy and watery along with the my "mixed greens", the fried chicken pieces tasted like twice fried and burnt. Husband's burger came with two tone onion rings, combination of old and freshly made rings. Not to mention that our dinner took 30 mins from the kitchen to our table, yeah, salad and a burger.
What's going on with my beloved locally owned Mama's cafe? Our waitstaff waas obviously studying for her collage courses as she seated herself at the big table in the back to study whatever she was studying and one of the kitchen staff kept coming out with his dirty apron to watch the basketball game.
GIVE ME BACK THE MAMA'S CAFE I ONCE LOVED!!!
Momma is failing the grade.... – I have been going to Momma's Cafe for as long as I can remember. It has that ice house, Texadelphia, decor, with a usually packed house, especially in the mornings. The breakfast is by far the best. Its rare that I ever order anything buy the signature Huevos Hoffbrau; which is the best hangover grub in town. The service is hit and miss; one time i went and the waiter was amazing; he never wrote down our order, was friendly, fast, and remembered what everyone ordered. The next time I went the waiter forgot to put our order in, and we waited 30 minutes before she came back to our table only to blame it on the kitchen.
Here is my problem with Momma's. It's ditry. It smells like a frat house after a weekend bash. Not as much of stale beer, but rather like dirty dish water. The games never work; the bathroom is nasty; and the back room had a dripping AC unit that fell right on the center of the dining table. Momma needs a super-clean; and i think this will get her back. The food is good however.
Can be better – Food is fine, but the place can be better.the games are always broken and the bathroom is the worst
Really good – I got the huevos hofbrau and the texas twister burger cooked medium rare. The burger looked really interesting but wasn't quite so delicious. The patty was way too soft, and form shaped; but the huevoes hofbrau are absolutely phenomenal, queso covered migas hits the spot like none other.
Don't go after twilight – By day ,this place is ok. But it's like Jekyl and Hyde. After dark it's loud and the service is the worst in town. My group waited 30 minutes for a table (ok that was our choice), but we didn't choose to wait over an hour with no food. When I asked the server about our food, she was rude and loud. We left and will never go back. Mai's on Milam is much better.
Confort Food At It's Best – I can't say enough about Mama's!
Whether it's a weekend lunch with the girls or a quick dinner with the family, Mama's Cafe never disappoints. The confy dining atmosphere in the back of the building makes for a nice place for me and my girlfriends to enjoy a relaxing lunch on weekends. The bar is good for a happy hour bite to eat with music, dartboards and good drinks to finish off your day.
My hubby loves the meatloaf, but always gets it without the cajun sauce on top (it's alittle spicy for his tatsetbuds) but you can always order it with gravy on the side. The liver & onions tastes so homemade you will think your "mama" is in the kitchen.
The portions are huge and we can almost always make 2 meals out of an entree. Not to mention that a hearty dinner for dinner 2 is hardly ever over $20.
A good breakfast at a great price! – Back in the late 70's and throughout the 80'swe use to go here regularly, but this AM I was a little disappointed. I got there a bout 9:30 on a Sun., which was perfect timing, sat right down. My waitress was a delightful young college girl, who was very attentive. The prices are terrific and with the exception of the chicken fried steak, everything was good. The steak was like a bath tub toy, orange and rubbery. But the hash browns, gravy and eggs were all done just right. The Bloody Mary had plenty of vodka and a nice celery salt/Old Bay rim. The Coconut Cream pie had Cool Whip topping, but was still very tasty and half the price of our favorite spots that use real whipped cream. It was good enough to earn a "to go" slice for my pregnant daughter, who has developed quite a fondness for the Coconut Cream pie over the last 9 months.
Mama's use to serve both a Chicken Fried and a Country Fried steak and both were delicious. The waitress swore they were made from scratch today, but they bore no similarity to the ones from "the good old days". But, hey, if you're hungry, you won't get more for your buck anywhere in town. My daughter and I shared this Skillet, a big chicken fried steak with gravy on one plate, along with a skillet with 2 eggs over fresh hash browns mixed with corn, and your choice of biscuits or toast.. Additionally we had another Skillet for hubby, a bagel, orange juice, coffee, bloody Mary and 2 pieces of pie, for just at $30.
Spring Clean, I Will Return – The food and service is usually great. However, after this weekend?s dining experience I will not return unless management thoroughly cleans the building. The windows were fully of flies, the blinds were covered in food, the menus were dirty and the bathrooms were more than unbearable. I wonder what the kitchen looks like and where the wait staff washes their hands?
After Hours Dining – If you are looking for the 4 seasons--don't go here; however, if you are looking for a hot meal after 9pm it is practically the only game in the area. The grilled chicken breast and steamed broccoli are both healthy and satisfying. If you seek comfort food, the meat loaf has a spicey sauce and the mashed potatoes complement the main course. Ask for Tim to be your server--he is friendly without trying to be your new best friend and will remember you--and probably your preferences--the next time you come in.
I make better food at home. – I have eaten here several times at various times of the day, including late night. I am just not impressed at all with service or the food. I expected it to be really good (since I am from Louisiana and definitely appreciate some good fried food), but personally I think I make better food at home, including their breakfast selections. To me, nothing was seasoned very well. Kind of just bland. Plus, they don't have sweet tea. In the South, you expect some darn sweet tea with your comfort food!
