Reviews for Banh Cuon Tay Ho

Best "banh cuon" (vietnamese rice cake rolls) in town – "Banh cuon" is one of those Vietnamese dishes that not everyone gets. Make some rice flour batter, make it really really thin, put some filling in it, then roll up up and voila, you have yourself some "banh cuon". The traditional filling is a mixture of ground pork, black fungus, onions, and mushrooms, but you can also get it with bbq pork filling, or with no filling. Banh Cuon Tay Ho is now located in the Hong Kong City Mall 4 at Bellaire and Boone, where it took over a sandwich stand, and has sectioned off an area of the mall for the general seating area. A franchise of the popular Banh Cuon Tay Ho chain from Orange County, CA (I've been to the original many times), Tay Ho 18 does a pretty good job of representing the franchise. The banh cuon has just the right amount of chewiness and is always served fresh. (Bad banh cuon is thick and doesn't have any chewiness to it). The fish sauce tastes good and and you can get it spicy or not spicy. The service is fairly quick and they keep the eating space very clean. However, I couldn't help but notice the strong smell of the disinfectant they use for cleaning, which detracted from the eating experience. I prefer to take mine to go. The dishes are very reasonably priced (around $5.50, and get you several banh cuon rolls, blanched bean sprouts, julienned cucumber, crispy fried yam cakes, and fish sauce dip. You can also forgo all the trimmings when you order to go and order by the pound. They prepare the "banh cuon nhan thit" (filled with meat) and "banh cuon thanh chi" (plain without meat) by the pound.
