No longer recommend!!! – WTH happened to this place?? Show up at 4:38, and about 4:50 we finally get a drink. Now you can take half a day with my food and you'll not hear a peep out of me, not so when it comes to drinks. However, pulling into the parking lot the words I spoke kinda foreshadowed events to come, "Where is everyone?". I have never been to this place when there wasn't some sort of issue with parking, but not so on this particular occasion. To set the scene, there were no other people in the restaurant except one guy at a table waiting for what would be two others, and a playground full of employees. All carrying on about this and that, laughing and playing tag and what not. Half way through our wait at the bar I over hear one girl "have they been helped?". Now, did you catch the 'half way through' part? Cause still more time passed till we were finally greeted and drinks served. At 4:55 I notice happy hour menus go out and still I counted the minutes till we were approached again. 5:10 was that time!! Now mind you I wanted to leave well before this point. When you hear people spending more time talking than working you know to leave, however I was trying to not be the person that over reacts, especially since the food has always been decent. My friend had tried the Tataki Salad before and loved it, and I have always been happy with the veg sushi, this time not so much. The grilled jalapeno sushi tasted like cucumber and the rest was unremarkable, same sentiments from my friend about her salad that she had once really enjoyed. At this point I flagged down the waiter and got the bill with full intention of still leaving a decent tip and walking away with the delusion that they might just be having an off night. Well, and this is the perfect ending to this wretched experience, the waiter drops off the check for me to sign and as he does the card falls out and catches his foot so as to kick it a couple of feet from the table. My friend starts to point and I look over to see my credit card is on the floor (even though he has kicked it with his foot, he is just as clueless as the rest of the experience) and as I get up to retrieve it the waiter is turning around to walk back (presumably to chat with the hostess some more) and says nothing. I guess he was under the impression I thought it would be a lark to throw my credit card to the floor and hunt for it?
Sorry, in good consciousness how can anyone reward (tip) someone for what amounts to incompetence? I watched other people having seamless dining experiences so at least one or two employees were doing a great job.
In conclusion, I can no longer defend this place from the mediocre reviews it has received in the past. The more recent negative reviews really reflect the current state of this establishment.
--The food has dramatically declined since my last visit in mid November.
--Staff need to be retrained for many reasons!! (esp our server Jesus)
If you want the one thing that can best sum up this particular place, well it would be this...
In my 20 years of restaurant experience the 2 most important things that you can judge your experience on are the food and the service, with those two things in mind this then would have to be the Wal-Mart of sushi!!
Unacceptable – Went to Miyako with a couple of friends. The food was over priced and it was nothing extraordinary. Before we left, a waiter came to serve water to my friends, - they didn't refill my drink since before we ordered dessert, neither they serve me any water - so, I asked for some water too, the guy left and shortly came back and handled me the glass which felt warm, I thought that it just came out of the dishwasher, I was extremely thirsty by then, so I immediatly gave it a sip, as the water touch my tonge IT BURNED it!!!, it was almost boiling water!!! I put the glass on the table and the steam was coming out of the water!, my husband went to look for the manager, who replied saying "it was probably a language barrier"!!!, the manager came with my husband to the table, didn't introduce himself and the only thing he said was: "I apologize, what can I do to make it better for you?" "do you know who brought you the water?" obviously I couldn't locate the guy, neither the manager did anything "to make it better", I was holding my tears in front of my friends, I was in pain. I consider unacceptable and in my case even DANGEROUS that their employees aren't able to comunicate with their customers. The manager did not do anything about it, we paid our bill and left. WILL NEVER NEVER NEVER GO BACK TO MIYAKO.
love/hate relationship. – the only time i go is during happy hour. it can be a bit pricey without the happy hour prices. overall, not a sushi place that stands out except for the select few dishes like the salmon capaccio, albacore, lobster ceviche, or the hot geisha. recently had the dynamite pizza. would NOT recommend. horrible.
Ridiculously overpriced!!! – I've been to Miyako twice, both times because other people wanted to go there. I have no idea why. Miyako is easily the most overpriced sushi in Houston - and this includes The Fish, which is also overpriced. The Fish can at least claim a good location, but Miyako is in an inconvenient shopping center, the food is average at best, and the prices are outrageous. In addition to the overpriced food, they look for ways to charge extra (when I went with a large group they told us that a group of ten had to sit in separate rooms, then charged a large fee for two rooms, refused to let us order happy hour because we were in separate rooms, and then charged %20 gratuity on top of everything else). There is really no reason to go to this restaurant when there are better sushi options just down the street (Aka on Alabama is the best sushi in town) and better general dining right next door (The Red Onion is fantastic).
BAD MANAGEMENT AT KIRBY LOCATION – This is the second time that I have bad service at Miyako. The first time my party and I were asked if we were almost done with the table because it was needed. I'm not accustomed to have to shovel my food down my when I pay good money to eat at a decent restaurant. The second time was this past Friday June 25th. We were at our table (4 of us) and had 2 friends call and ask if they could join us, I asked the waiter (who by the way gave us great service) if we could add another table since we were sitting at a table for four and there would now be 6 of us, or if we could move to a booth. He spoke to the "manager" probably the bleach blond lady with the head set and they said no. I could add 2 more seats if i wanted to. I said ( to the tall asian hostess who was sent to speak to us) will 2 seats fit comfortable on this table for 4? All i got was a shrug from the tall skinny girl and she walked away. If I wanted to be treated as if I was at a low rate sushi buffet... then I would go to one. Keep your money and go else where it's not worth the bad treatment. Management just doesnt get it. What happend to good customer service? i dont believe in giving my money to places with bad service. The owners hould definitely look into getting new management there.
Absolutely Lost My Appetite!!! – OK, first off, when I took the first bite of edamame, I quickly realized it had already been eaten, for it had the beans missing, AND the shell had been chewed!!! Disgusting!!! I wish I would have been paying attention to that one!!! THEN, when my order of sashimi came, (fresh salmon and yellowtail), it tasted fishy, then I smelled of it! It was going bad!!! I moved on to the salmon roe, which was good, but I really could not eat anymore, because I was sick to my stomach. Our waiter WAS kind and sympathetic, but DID tell me that HE was told the fish was fresh........it clearly was not!! So he comped my Shirley Timple..........I WILL NOT eat there again!!
manager does not care about customer service!!!!! – I waited for 30 minutes until I went to the manager for service. He said he was going to take care of me. Took my order and delivered my first dish and never came back. He did not take care of me, nor cared about what I wanted. The food is good, but they can't expected customers to wait. I expected better from this well established resturant.
avoid going there on any night – grossest sushi ever, i almost threw up in my mouth when i tried several entrees i ordered. never go there. very bad experience.why cream cheese in a sushi? so disgusting!
Great for a large party! – We went there for a friend's birthday party and had a wonderful dining experience. The service was attentive and patient. The cute japanese atmosphere was great. And the food and drinks were awesome. The hot geisha roll is out of this world and I highly recommend it.
awesome happy hour specials – i like this location better than the westheimer one, especially because of the japanese-style seating in one part of the restaurant. out of the rolls i've tried, i would recommend the S&M, the Miyako special, crazy maki, the shrimp and asparagus handroll (this location had the creamy japanese mayo, which the westheimer one left out). A california roll contained cucumber past its prime, and i got an ikura sushi that looked as if it had been pre-made a little too far in advance, but the uni sushi i got was divine - the best i'd ever had, with plenty of it packed on top of the rice, to boot. one time i went with a big group, and the waitress forgot to take my order (not surprising because i was inconveniently wedged in between two other tables, an obvious sacrifice in comfort for more seating in the dining area).
However, I am willing to overlook these flaws because the happy hour specials are such a great deal... and $1 fried ice cream is a great way to end the meal.
