The Daniel Day-Lewis character is capitalism personified, as told through the eyes of socialist Upton Sinclair. He starts out hard-working, taciturn, honest and ruggedly individualistic, just like early capitalism. You like him, just like you like early Americans. But then he gradually devolves into madness. His final chapter is the same as that of capitalism, or of a 21st century America. The tension between the two competitive characters, the Holy Roller preacher (religion) and the Day-Lewis character (capitalism), is palpable throughout. It's about control: who's gonna have it and who's not. It's only logical that the the conclusion to the film is what it is.

This is one of the best movies I have seen recently. The acting was unbelievable and the movie does truly deserve all of the praise that it is receiving. I don't want to say anymore about it then what you see in the trailors....it makes it better not really know what will happen....but you can expect something great.

Maybe it would make sense if I'd have read the book. Powerful performances punctuated by irritating "music" and a beffudled plot line with characters motivated by seemingly nothing. Over time, the picture degenerates into pathos for it's own sake while occasionally seeming to say, "Look at how intense I am!". Why this movie is getting such "critical acclaim' I don't know. Maybe there is a REALLY pretentious film school student that thinks this is genuis, but the rest of us won't. It kind of reminds me of a quote from Bill Murray's character in "Tootsie" where he is holding court with a bunch of dreamy-eyed film school students at a party: "I don't won't people to say that they liked my movie, or that they didn't like my movie. I want them to say, "WHAT did I just see?'". Yes, that about sums it up -- in addition to an apology to your date.

If you are a fan of Daniel Day-Lewis you will love this film. He is incredible in the film especially in the baptising scene but if you want to see a movie that will cheer you up do not go and see this film. It is a very interesting story about Daniel Plainview's life and oil exploration but it is very dark and depressing. It was a little slow at times also. Unless you are a fan I would probably wait until video. The music was also pretty creepy.

Pros: incredible acting

Cons: dark and depressing story
