We found the Madonna Inn on our journey from San Francisco to LA quite by accident. We had been told about it but really didn't know how "famous" it was! We stayed in one of the rock rooms - very unusual - hard on bare feet - but fun. Comfy bed - great shower but don't drop anything breakable!! We looked around before we left - actually we peeked in windows of the other rooms. We would recommend it, just for the novelty of it, to our friends. It was a bit pricey but I was able to talk them down a bit. Beautiful location and grounds. Fun to see.
Pros: Variety and choice of rooms
Cons: A bit pricey but you pay for the novelty of it.

We were booked into the Caveman room which was absolutely the most unique room I have stayed in. However the waterfall shower was more like two hoses pointing at each other and spraying water in all directions. There was no bottled water available to buy in the room or on the location, no room service and not a tap in sight to even fill a glass with. We booked dinner in the steak house and spent a fortune eating bland steaks and frozen vegetables. The next morning we were woken at 6.45AM by the sound of drilling, sawing and hammering. There is a note at check out saying that there is construction within limited hours but I certainly don't consider 6.45AM limited. When the receptionist asked me how our stay was I told her it was not good, her response was "Oh dear, feel free to take a complimentary postcard on your way out"!!!!! I was so shocked I just left without saying a word.
Pros: Unique rooms
Cons: Everything else!

My husband and I stayed at the Caveman Room (his idea) the first year we started dating. We ended up getting engaged there two years ago. We then had our Sunday brunch (after our wedding) there near the saloon last June. The brunch was delicious and the servers were friendly. Despite the PINK decor, this place is well-run and the food and service are professional. It's tons of fun and really romantic in its own strange way. I did NOT find the Caveman room musty at all. It was extremely clean and well-outfitted. We have been back several times with our in-laws and enjoyed it every time! P.S. Get a look at the waterfall urinals downstairs in the main building if time permits... P.P.S. The rock/waterfall rooms are the best in our opinions.
Pros: Unique, fun, high-quality
Cons: A little pricey for the average Joe

Surprised my boyfriend for his birthday w/ a Friday night stay in the all-rock Caveman Room. What a cool room! I only wish I had a picture of his face when we opened the door - like a little kid at the entrance of Disneyland... This room probably isn't for everyone, but we loved it - everything from the waterfall shower to the clubs hanging on either side of the bed to the "waterfall wall". There was also an an unexpected large flat-screen TV w/ cable/comp HBO & 2 super soft robes - though my boyfriend didn't want to wear, since they're PINK - whatever! There is a bit of a musty smell in the room which didn't bother us one bit - it actually fits with the ambience of the room - sort of makes it more believable that you're in a cave. There are windows that open & air conditioning (or maybe just a fan? We didn't turn it on) if you need relief. The room was definitely pricey, thus the one night stay. Dinner @ the Gold Rush steak house was delicious (French filet mignon for him; halibut for me). The waitress provided a giant "Happy Birthday" balloon & complimentary chocolate cake - luckily for my boyfriend, the waiters don't sing & make a big production, or he would've crawled under the table. Oh, and the live band was very nice - very cute older couples cutting the rug all night - too sweet. Had breakfast @ the Copper Cafe (turkey & broccoli omelet for him; 2 eggs, bacon for me) - also very tasty. Restaurants were overpriced, but yummy. Wish they would bring down the prices a bit. Overall, we had a wonderful, fun time. We would love to come back, but maybe during the "off season" or during the week...

Not only is the Madonna Inn a fun hotel but it is located in a the nice little (big) town of San Luis Obispo, Ca. The have a cute little downtown where you see families, students, teenagers and young adults all intertwined. And every Thursday nights downtown is home to the local farmers market. Which consists of fine local food, entertainment, crafts and locally grown produce. So when you stay at the Inn be sure to check out the town.
Pros: Blackforest cake, close to shopping, celebrity occasionall
